What is Tootsa?
Tootsa is a British childrenswear label built around unisex clothing for children up to the age of eight. It was launched as Tootsa MacGinty and has since been known simply as Tootsa.
History
The brand was founded in London in 2011 by Kate Pietrasik, a womenswear designer who had previously worked on streetwear and sportswear for brands including Hilfiger and Roxy. After ten years living in France, she was struck by how sharply UK high street childrenswear was divided by gender and set out to design an alternative. In 2013 the company added its first adult item following customer requests, and in 2021 it was acquired by Inc Retail.
Products and positioning
Collections feature colourful, practical pieces designed to be worn by any child. Production takes place in Portugal, and the brand has produced fundraising T-shirts with the environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.
Distribution
Tootsa has sold to customers in the UK and Ireland, the United States, France, Italy and Australia, relying on social media, trade fairs and word of mouth rather than advertising.
Why it matters
Tootsa was an early mover in gender neutral childrenswear in the UK, anticipating a shift that larger retailers later followed.
