What is an AI agent in fashion?

An AI system that can plan and carry out multi-step tasks, using tools and data, with limited human instruction.

In short

An AI agent is an AI system that can plan and carry out multi-step tasks, using tools and data, with limited human instruction. In fashion, an agent might monitor a retailer's sell-through, propose re-orders and draft the order in a B2B portal for a buyer to approve.

How does it work in practice?

Most AI agents combine a large language model, which interprets goals and decides on next steps, with access to business systems through APIs. Given a task such as preparing next week's replenishment, the agent might read sales and stock data, compare it with targets, check availability at the brand, draft orders and summarise its reasoning for a human to review.

Agents can work for different sides of the wholesale relationship: for a brand's sales team, for a retailer's buyers, or for operations teams handling routine checks.

Why does it matter?

Many wholesale and retail tasks are repetitive but require looking across several systems. Agents could:

  • Take over routine re-orders and stock checks
  • Prepare tailored selections and order proposals before showroom meetings
  • Monitor deliveries and flag delays or errors early
  • Answer customer questions using live order and product data

This frees people for work that needs judgement, creativity and relationships.

How does AI use it?

An agent is itself an application of AI, so the key question is how it is allowed to act. Good practice includes clear permissions, limits on what can be ordered or changed, logs of every action, and human approval for decisions with financial or customer impact. Agents also need reliable APIs and clean data; otherwise they repeat existing errors faster.

Common pitfalls

  • Giving agents broad access without defined limits
  • Automating a process before it is well understood
  • No way to trace why an agent made a decision
  • Assuming agent output is correct without checks

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot mainly answers questions in conversation. An AI agent can also take actions across systems, such as looking up data, creating drafts or placing orders, to complete a multi-step task.

Can AI agents place wholesale orders?

Technically they can, if connected to an ordering system through APIs. Most businesses start with agents that draft orders for a human buyer to approve, keeping control over spending.
