What is a sales sample in fashion?

A physical garment made in advance of production so sales teams can show a style to wholesale buyers in showrooms and at trade shows.

In short

A sales sample is a pre-production garment used to sell a style to wholesale buyers. It shows the design, fabric and finish close to the final product, allowing buyers to touch and assess it before committing to orders that will be produced later.

How does it work in practice?

Once a collection is designed and developed, the brand orders sales sample sets from its suppliers, usually in a sample size and key colourways. Sets go to the main showroom, regional showrooms and agents, and some travel to trade shows. Buyers review them in appointments, often alongside line sheets or a digital showroom that shows the full colour range. After the selling period, samples are reused for marketing, archived or sold in sample sales.

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Sales samples are expensive: they are made in small runs, often at higher unit costs, and must be shipped across markets on tight timelines. Late or poor samples weaken sales, while too many sets inflate development budgets. Brands therefore balance the number of sample sets against the reach of their sales network and increasingly decide which styles really need a physical sample.

How is AI changing it?

3D garment simulation and AI-generated imagery let brands show styles digitally, so buyers can see colourways and fits without a physical sample for every variant. Analytics on past selling seasons help decide which styles need physical samples and in which markets. Some brands use digital twins in virtual showrooms to sell part of the line before samples exist, cutting cost and waste.

Common pitfalls

  • Producing full sample sets for styles that rarely sell.
  • Samples that differ noticeably from bulk production, leading to disputes.
  • Late sample delivery that shortens the selling period.
  • No tracking of where each sample set is located.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to sales samples after the season?

They are often used for photo shoots, kept in archives, passed to outlet or staff sales, or sold at sample sales. Some brands donate or recycle them.

Can digital samples replace sales samples?

Partly. Many buyers still want to feel fabrics, but 3D visuals can reduce the number of physical samples, especially for colourway variations or carry-over styles.
