Who is Alexander Fury?

Alexander Fury is a fashion journalist, critic, author and curator. As of 2025 he was described by Dazed as fashion features director at large of AnOther Magazine and men's fashion critic for the Financial Times, as well as an exhibition curator, archive owner and author of fashion books. He studied fashion history and theory at Central Saint Martins, and his criticism is known for combining historical knowledge with close reading of collections.

Career

Fury was fashion director of SHOWstudio, Nick Knight's fashion film platform, from 2008 to 2012. He was then named editor of Love magazine in 2012, and later became fashion editor of The Independent. He has also been chief fashion correspondent for T: The New York Times Style Magazine and fashion features director of AnOther Magazine before taking his current at large role there.

Alongside journalism, he writes books on fashion houses, including Dior: Catwalk (Thames and Hudson, 2017), and curates exhibitions. The Business of Fashion also notes that he has served on the British Fashion Council's selection panel for NEWGEN and worked as a creative consultant to Mary Katrantzou. He was named Fashion Commentator of the Year at the Editorial Intelligence awards for 2014 to 2015.

Influence on the fashion business

Fury's influence rests on the authority of independent criticism at a time when much fashion coverage is shaped by advertising and social media. His work matters to the business in several ways:

  • Criticism: his reviews of men's and women's collections help shape how designers and houses are perceived by buyers, executives and readers
  • History: his books and archive work connect contemporary collections to the heritage of houses, which brands increasingly use as a strategic asset
  • Talent: his involvement with emerging designer support schemes has given him a role in the London talent pipeline
  • Curation: exhibitions extend fashion criticism into museums and cultural institutions

He moves between print, digital and live formats, and has spoken publicly, for example in Dazed's 2025 series on how people entered the fashion industry, about combining these disciplines.

Why it matters

For fashion executives and creative directors, critics such as Fury remain an important signal of how a collection or a creative appointment is landing with an informed audience. His combination of criticism, history and curation reflects how fashion knowledge now flows across publishing, archives and exhibitions, and why heritage and authorship carry commercial weight.
