Who is Axel Dumas?
Axel Dumas, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1970, is the executive chairman of Hermès International, the title Hermès uses for its chief executive role, the Paris based luxury house known for its leather goods, silk and ready to wear. He is a sixth generation member of the Hermès and Dumas family; his uncle Jean-Louis Dumas led the company before him, and his cousin Pierre-Alexis Dumas is the house's artistic director.
Career
Dumas studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, holds a master's degree in law and graduated from Sciences Po in Paris. He later attended an executive programme at Harvard Business School. He began his career in banking at Paribas, working in Beijing from 1995 to 1997, in Paris from 1997 to 1999 and in New York from 1999 to 2003.
He joined Hermès in 2003 as an auditor. In 2006 he became chief executive of the jewellery division, and in 2008 he took over the leather goods division, the heart of the company's business. He was named chief operating officer in June 2013 and became chief executive in January 2014.

Influence on the fashion business
Under Dumas, Hermès has remained independent and family controlled while growing into one of the most closely watched companies in the luxury sector. The house is often cited as the clearest example of a model built on craftsmanship, controlled distribution and long term thinking rather than rapid expansion or frequent creative changes. Its approach to scarcity, in which supply of its most sought after bags is deliberately limited, has become a reference point for the wider industry.
Why it matters
Hermès describes the role of its executive chairmen as being "to manage the Group and act in its general interest". For fashion and luxury executives, Dumas represents a counter model to the conglomerate approach. Hermès has shown that a family company can grow strongly over more than a decade while retaining tight control of production, distribution and brand image. His leadership makes him one of the most closely watched chief executives in luxury, particularly in periods when the wider sector faces slowing demand.
