Who is Christopher Kane?
Christopher Kane was born in Newarthill, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1982. He rose to prominence in the late 2000s with a label known for inventive fabrics and unexpected references, and since March 2026 he has been creative director of women's ready to wear at Mulberry, the British leather goods brand.
Career
Kane studied at Central Saint Martins in London, graduating from the MA in 2006. That year he founded his namesake label with his sister, Tammy Kane, who managed the business side and contributed to fabric development. His debut collection of short neon bandage dresses attracted wide attention, and he also worked for Donatella Versace on Versace's atelier collection.
He was named New Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2007 and Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2013. In January 2013 Kering, then known as PPR, acquired a 51 per cent stake in the company to develop it internationally. The Kane family later bought the stake back. In June 2023 the business entered administration and the label ceased operating; in 2024 Kane designed a capsule collection for Self Portrait.
On 26 March 2026 Mulberry announced Kane as creative director of women's ready to wear. Chief executive Andrea Baldo said that welcoming him marked an important moment for the brand as it opened a new chapter for ready to wear. His first Mulberry collection was scheduled for September 2026, with retail availability from January 2027.
Influence on the fashion business
Kane's career touches several important industry themes:
- The role of London as an incubator for young design talent
- The opportunities and limits of minority or majority investment by luxury groups in emerging labels
- The financial fragility of independent designer businesses
- Heritage accessories brands expanding into ready to wear by hiring established designers
Why it matters
Christopher Kane's move to Mulberry follows a familiar pattern in which designers whose own labels struggled financially bring their creative reputation to an established brand. For Mulberry, best known for handbags, the appointment is a test of whether a strong designer voice can build a credible ready to wear business alongside its leather goods.
