Who is Daniel Roseberry?

Daniel Roseberry was born in Plano, Texas, in 1985. He is the creative director of Schiaparelli, the Paris couture house founded by Elsa Schiaparelli in 1927. On his appointment in April 2019 he became the first American to lead a French couture house, and one of the youngest designers to do so.

Career

Roseberry studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York but left in 2008 to join Thom Browne. He spent more than a decade there, rising to design director for both men's and women's collections.

Schiaparelli had closed in 1954 and reopened at Place Vendôme in 2012, receiving the official haute couture label in 2017. Roseberry joined in 2019 without formal couture training and presented his debut collection in July 2019, staging a show in which he sat at a drafting table on the runway.

Under his direction the house has become known for sculptural pieces and surreal details that echo its founder. His high profile commissions include Lady Gaga's outfit for President Biden's inauguration in 2021, as well as looks for Beyoncé and Michelle Obama. He received the Neiman Marcus Award for Creative Impact in Fashion in 2024, and in July 2026 he presented Schiaparelli's autumn and winter 2026 couture collection in Paris.

Influence on the fashion business

Roseberry's work at Schiaparelli is a prominent example of how a dormant heritage name can be revived through couture:

  • Using couture and viral red carpet moments to build brand awareness
  • Reinterpreting an archive of strong codes, such as surrealism and trompe l'oeil
  • Building desirability before broader ready to wear and accessories expansion
  • Showing that a designer from outside the couture tradition can lead a Paris house

Roseberry came to couture without speaking French and without formal haute couture training, which made his appointment unusual for a Paris house. His background at Thom Browne, a brand known for precise tailoring and theatrical presentations, has informed his approach to construction and showmanship.

Why it matters

Few heritage revivals have attracted as much attention as Schiaparelli under Roseberry. His tenure shows how image, craftsmanship and social media visibility can combine to reposition a historic name in the modern luxury market.
