Who was Gianni Versace?

Giovanni Maria "Gianni" Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, in December 1946 and died in Miami Beach in July 1997. He founded Versace, one of the most recognisable Italian luxury brands, and drew heavily on the classical heritage of his home region, including Greek and Roman motifs.

Career

Versace began his career in the early 1970s as a designer for other labels, including work for Genny on its Byblos line. He opened his first boutique in Milan in 1978 under his own name and quickly became known for a maximalist aesthetic that contrasted with the minimalist trends of the period.

In 1982 he introduced Oroton, a lightweight metal mesh fabric that became a signature of his collections. He was also among the first designers to cast top models such as Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista together and to promote them as stars, a practice that helped create the supermodel era of the early 1990s.

By the time of his death the business had grown into an international group with around 130 boutiques worldwide. He was killed outside his home in Miami Beach in July 1997. His sister Donatella Versace succeeded him as head of design.

Influence on the fashion business

Versace changed how fashion houses used celebrity and spectacle. His legacy for the industry includes:

  • Turning runway shows and models into global media events
  • Close links between fashion, music and film celebrities
  • A strong, instantly recognisable graphic identity
  • A maximalist alternative to minimalism that remains influential

The company has since changed hands more than once, and the Prada Group completed its acquisition of Versace in December 2025. Creative leadership passed from Donatella Versace to Dario Vitale in 2025, and Pieter Mulier became chief creative officer on 1 July 2026.

By the time of his death the business was valued at around 807 million dollars, according to widely cited figures. Versace's mix of classical references, bold prints and sensual cuts made the brand instantly recognisable on the red carpet and in advertising.

Why it matters

Gianni Versace demonstrated the commercial power of image, celebrity and a strong visual identity. Many of the marketing practices that are now standard in luxury, from celebrity front rows to logo driven branding, owe a debt to the way he built his house in the 1980s and 1990s.
