Who is Hamish Bowles?
Hamish Bowles is a fashion editor, writer and curator born in London in 1963. He is best known for his long career at Vogue, where he holds the title of global editor at large, and for his deep knowledge of couture, costume history and interiors. Few editors combine magazine journalism and scholarly fashion history as closely as he does.
Career
Bowles studied at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. He joined the British edition of Harper's Bazaar in 1984 as a fashion editor and later became its fashion director and, from 1989, its style director. In 1992 he moved to American Vogue, where he has written features, reported on the couture collections and contributed to the magazine for more than three decades.
In January 2021 Condé Nast announced that Bowles would become editor of The World of Interiors, succeeding Rupert Thomas, who had led the British title for 22 years. Bowles kept his Vogue role in parallel and served as editor in chief from September 2021. In March 2024 he handed day to day responsibility to Emily Tobin and became creative director at large of the magazine, saying he wanted to focus on creativity while continuing to support the title.
Influence on the fashion business
Bowles is a reference point for anyone interested in how fashion's past shapes its present. His influence comes from several directions:
- Long form reporting on couture houses and designers for Vogue
- Creative consulting for exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including the Costume Institute show on Jacqueline Kennedy, for which he also edited the accompanying book
- Curatorial work at Chatsworth House in England
- Bridging fashion and interior design through his World of Interiors editorship
For brands, his writing has helped frame heritage and craftsmanship as a commercial asset, an argument that has become central to luxury marketing.
Hamish Bowles and digital media
Bowles has also carried Vogue's archive thinking into new formats. He has hosted the podcast series In Vogue: The 1990s and In Vogue: The 2000s and narrated Vogue's YouTube series Everything You Need to Know. When he took over The World of Interiors he said he wanted to bring the magazine to new online, video and digital platforms, reflecting the wider shift of print titles towards multi channel publishing.
Why it matters
In an industry increasingly driven by speed and social media, Bowles represents the value of expertise, archives and long memory. His career shows how a magazine editor can act as a historian, curator and storyteller at once, and how fashion knowledge travels between print, museums and digital formats.
