Jil Sander

Founder of the Jil Sander fashion house

Jil Sander is a German designer who founded her Hamburg label in 1968 and became one of the defining figures of minimalist luxury fashion. Who is Jil Sander?

Jil Sander, born Heidemarie Jiline Sander in 1943 in Wesselburen, Germany, is a fashion designer and the founder of the brand that carries her name. Her work is closely associated with purist, minimalist tailoring, precise cuts and high quality materials, an aesthetic that shaped luxury fashion from the 1980s onwards.

Career

Sander founded her business in Hamburg in 1968 and launched her own collection in 1973. The company grew into an international group and was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the late 1980s.

In 1999 the Prada Group acquired a 75 percent stake. Sander resigned as chairwoman and chief designer in January 2000, returned in May 2003 and left again in November 2004. The brand then passed through several owners: Change Capital Partners from 2006, the Japanese group Onward from 2008, and OTB, the group led by Renzo Rosso, since March 2021. Sander returned once more as designer from February 2012 to October 2013.

Influence on the fashion business

Sander's minimalism became a template for many luxury and premium brands, and later creative directors of the house, including Raf Simons from 2005 to 2012 and Lucie and Luke Meier from 2017 to 2025, worked within the codes she established. Since March 2025 the brand's creative director has been Simone Bellotti, formerly of Bally.

Her +J collaboration with Uniqlo, which ran from 2009 to 2011, with selected pieces relaunched in 2014 and a further collaboration for autumn/winter 2020, was one of the most prominent partnerships between a luxury designer and a global fast retail chain. It helped prove that designer credibility and mass market scale could be combined profitably.

Why it matters

Jil Sander's career covers several themes that remain central to the industry: the value of a clear and consistent aesthetic, the difficulty of keeping a founder engaged after a sale to a larger group, and the commercial potential of collaborations between luxury designers and high volume retailers. Her name remains one of the strongest German brands in global fashion.
