Who is Marc Metrick?

Marc Metrick is one of the longest serving executives in American luxury department store retail. He joined Saks in 1995 and rose through the business to lead Saks Fifth Avenue and then Saks Global, the holding company that brings together Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off 5th, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. He stepped down as chief executive on 2 January 2026.

Career

Metrick's career has been spent almost entirely within Saks. By January 2018 he was president of Saks Fifth Avenue, and that month his responsibilities were expanded to include Gilt and Saks Off 5th, the group's off price and flash sale businesses at the time. He later became chief executive and led the business as it was reorganised into Saks Global.

  • 1995: joined Saks
  • By 2018: president of Saks Fifth Avenue
  • January 2018: remit expanded to Gilt and Saks Off 5th
  • Later: chief executive of Saks Global
  • 2 January 2026: stepped down as chief executive; Richard Baker, the executive chairman, took on the role

Announcing his departure, Metrick said that after nearly three decades with Saks he would be stepping down as chief executive. The company credited him with leading the organisation through a period of growth and innovation and strengthening its position in the luxury market.

Influence on the fashion business

Saks is one of the most important wholesale partners for luxury and designer brands in North America. As a leader of the business over many years, Metrick was a key counterpart for European and American luxury houses that reach American customers through department stores, both in flagship stores and online.

His exit came at a turbulent moment. Within days, Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the strain of the Neiman Marcus takeover having been widely cited, and Baker was in turn replaced by former Neiman Marcus chief executive Geoffroy van Raemdonck in mid January 2026. Reports of Metrick's expected departure had circulated in late December 2025.

Marc Metrick and technology

Metrick's expanded role in 2018 placed Gilt, an online flash sale business, under his leadership alongside Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off 5th. This combination of full price, off price and online formats reflected the group's effort to run its luxury retail operations across channels rather than as separate businesses.

Why it matters

Marc Metrick's long career at Saks traces the evolution of the American luxury department store from a store led business to a multichannel group. The events surrounding his departure and Saks Global's restructuring are closely watched by brands that depend on department store distribution in the United States.
