Who is Marco Bizzarri?

Marco Bizzarri, born in Reggio Emilia in 1962, is one of the most successful luxury executives of his generation. He is best known for his years as president and chief executive of Gucci, during which the Kering owned house became one of the fastest growing brands in luxury.

Career

Bizzarri began as a management consultant at Accenture in 1986. In 1993 he joined the Bologna based group Mandarina Duck, where he eventually became chief executive, and in 2004 he was general manager of Marithé et François Girbaud. From 2005 to 2009 he was president and chief executive of Stella McCartney, achieving the company's first profit in 2007.

In 2009 he became president and chief executive of Bottega Veneta, leading the house through the global financial crisis, and joined Kering's executive committee in 2012. In 2014 he became chief executive of Kering's couture and leather goods division, and in 2015 he took charge of Gucci. He left Gucci in 2023 as part of a management reshuffle at Kering.

In February 2024 Bizzarri registered Nessifashion, a Rome based investment company that provides financial support and strategic advice to businesses, with Bizzarri as sole administrator. In 2025 he was reported to be among the parties interested in Versace before its sale to Prada.

Influence on the fashion business

Bizzarri's Gucci years are a landmark case in luxury management. Highlights include:

  • Appointing Alessandro Michele as creative director in 2015
  • Revenue growth from 3.9 billion euros in 2015 to 9.6 billion euros in 2019
  • A strong emphasis on creative freedom and company culture
  • Sustainability initiatives at Gucci

The partnership between Bizzarri and Michele is often cited as an example of how a bold creative vision combined with commercial execution can transform a brand in a short time.

Why it matters

Few executives have been associated with growth on the scale of Gucci in the late 2010s. Bizzarri's career, from Stella McCartney and Bottega Veneta to Gucci, shows a consistent approach of pairing designers with business discipline, and his move into investing makes him a potential force in the next phase of consolidation in Italian fashion.
