Who is Michael Kliger?

Michael Kliger is a German executive who has become one of the most influential figures in luxury e-commerce. He is chief executive of LuxExperience B.V., the parent company formerly known as MYT Netherlands, whose businesses include Mytheresa, NET-A-PORTER, MR PORTER and YOOX.

Career

Mytheresa grew out of Theresa, a boutique opened in Munich in 1987 by Susanne and Christoph Botschen, which launched its online store in 2006. The business later became part of the US department store group Neiman Marcus and was carved out of Neiman Marcus's bankruptcy estate in 2020. Kliger led Mytheresa as chief executive for more than ten years, a period in which it developed from a German online boutique into an international luxury platform.

In January 2021 Mytheresa's parent company, MYT Netherlands, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, raising about 407 million dollars. In October 2024 Mytheresa announced the acquisition of YOOX Net-a-Porter from Richemont, and the deal was completed in April 2025. The parent company was renamed LuxExperience B.V. with effect from 1 May 2025, with Kliger as its chief executive. In November 2025 LuxExperience named Francis Belin, formerly president of Christie's Asia Pacific, as chief executive of Mytheresa from 1 January 2026, so that Kliger could concentrate on his role as group chief executive with strategic oversight of Mytheresa, NET-A-PORTER, MR PORTER and YOOX.

Influence on the fashion business

Kliger is associated with a clear, selective model of online luxury retail. Mytheresa built its reputation on:

  • A curated edit of luxury brands rather than the widest possible assortment
  • A focus on high spending customers and personal service
  • Exclusive capsule collections and events with luxury houses
  • A largely wholesale based model with careful inventory management

The takeover of YOOX Net-a-Porter brought together two former rivals and created a multi brand group spanning full price luxury, menswear and off price. It is one of the most significant consolidations in fashion e-commerce since the online luxury boom of the 2010s.

Michael Kliger and technology

As head of a digital first retailer, Kliger runs businesses whose operations rely on online platforms, data driven merchandising and international logistics. Integrating several large luxury e-commerce operations under one parent is one of the main operational tasks of LuxExperience.

Why it matters

For luxury brands, online multi brand retailers are important wholesale partners and a shop window to wealthy customers worldwide. With Mytheresa, Net-a-Porter, Mr Porter and YOOX under one roof, Kliger now leads the largest group in the sector, and his strategy will shape how luxury fashion is sold online.
