Who is Phoebe Philo?
Phoebe Philo is a British designer, born in Paris in 1973 and raised in London. She is one of the most influential womenswear designers of the past two decades, known for clothes that combine a strong, distinctive aesthetic with everyday wearability. Her work at Céline in particular shaped the look of contemporary luxury womenswear and inspired a devoted following among customers and designers alike.
Career
Philo joined Chloé in 1997 as design assistant to Stella McCartney and became creative director in 2001, a role she held until 2006. Her Chloé years were commercially successful and associated with bestselling accessories such as the Paddington bag.
In 2008 LVMH appointed her creative director of Céline. Over the following decade she redefined the house with a precise, grown up minimalism that critics and buyers followed closely each season. She left after her final collections for the house in 2018.
In 2021 she announced plans for her own label, and the first collection launched in October 2023, sold online in limited editions. Philo is the majority owner of the business, with LVMH holding a minority stake. From 2024 the brand expanded into selected wholesale partners, beginning with Bergdorf Goodman.

- Céline: creative director 2008 to 2018
- Phoebe Philo: own label, launched October 2023
Influence on the fashion business
Philo's influence can be seen in the number of designers who have worked with her and gone on to lead other houses, and in the many brands that adopted the clean, functional style she popularised. Her own label is also notable as a business model: rather than following the traditional seasonal calendar, it has released collections in edits and drops, initially through its own website, before selectively adding wholesale partners. That approach gives the brand tight control of distribution, pricing and image.
Why it matters
Phoebe Philo is a reference point for how a designer's personal vision can build a lasting following that transfers from one brand to another. Her independent label, backed but not controlled by a major group, is closely watched as a test of whether a founder led luxury brand can grow on its own terms through direct to consumer launches and carefully chosen retail partners.
