Who is Stefano Pilati?
Stefano Pilati was born in Milan in 1965 and is one of the most experienced Italian creative directors of his generation. He is best known for his years at the head of Yves Saint Laurent, where he succeeded Tom Ford, and more recently for his independent label Random Identities.
Career
Pilati began his career at Giorgio Armani in 1993 as an assistant in menswear. He moved to Prada in 1995 to work on fabric research and development and in 1998 became an assistant designer at Miu Miu, reporting to Miuccia Prada. In 2000 he joined Yves Saint Laurent as a designer for ready to wear and accessories, and in 2004 he succeeded Tom Ford as creative director. During his tenure he created products such as the tulip skirt, the Muse bag and the Tribute sandal.
After leaving Saint Laurent in 2012, he became head of design and creative director at Ermenegildo Zegna, where he launched the Ermenegildo Zegna Couture line with a first show in June 2013. He remained until February 2016 and was also creative director of the womenswear brand Agnona until July 2015.
Random Identities and recent work
In 2017 Pilati founded Random Identities, a ready to wear brand based between Berlin and Milan. The label says it "merges masculine and feminine details for sophisticated, everyday wear" and has been "subverting conventions since 2017". In 2023 he was a guest designer for a Fendi collection. In September and October 2024 he released a capsule collaboration with Zara of more than 80 designs, photographed by Steven Meisel.

Influence on the fashion business
Pilati's career spans many of the structural shifts in luxury over three decades: the growth of Italian houses, the reinvention of Saint Laurent under group ownership, the rise of luxury menswear and, more recently, the convergence of designer talent and fast fashion through high profile collaborations. His Zara project in particular showed how a designer with a strong luxury pedigree can be used by a mass retailer to signal quality and taste.
Why it matters
As one of the creative directors who held a major Paris house through the 2000s, Pilati is a reference point for how heritage brands manage design succession. His later work demonstrates the different routes open to senior designers after a big house role, from independent labels to guest collaborations and partnerships with global retailers.
