Who is Walter Van Beirendonck?

Walter Van Beirendonck, born in Brecht in 1957, is a Belgian fashion designer and one of the six Antwerp graduates whose collective appearance in London in 1986 put Belgian fashion on the international map. His menswear stands out for unusual colour combinations, strong graphic influences and references drawn from the visual arts, literature, nature and ethnic dress.

Career

Van Beirendonck graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1980. In 1986 he joined Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee at the British Designer Show in London, the moment the Antwerp fashion museum MoMu describes as the group's breakthrough. He established his line W.&L.T. in 1983, and it became the basis of his long running independent label.

His work has often crossed into music and culture. In 1997 he designed costumes for U2's PopMart tour, and in 1999 he was named a cultural ambassador of Flanders. In 2001 he curated the Antwerp project Fashion 2001 Landed / Geland and launched a magazine that became A Magazine Curated By.

Educator and mentor

For many years Van Beirendonck headed the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, a position he held until 2022. The department has produced a long list of internationally known designers, and his teaching made him one of the most influential mentors in European fashion education.

Influence on the fashion business

Van Beirendonck has remained an independent designer, showing in Paris and pursuing collaborations that test new ideas. In June 2024 Fashion Dive reported a 19 piece collaboration with G-Star Raw, launched in early 2025, that used cradle to cradle certified materials and construction methods such as gluing, taping and pressing instead of conventional stitching. He told the publication: "Why are clothes still being stitched when we have the potential to explore so many other techniques?"

  • Independent label sustained over four decades
  • Collaborations that bring avant garde ideas to larger brands
  • A teaching legacy visible across today's designer generation

Why it matters

Van Beirendonck shows how an independent designer can remain relevant through education, culture and selective partnerships rather than scale. His W.&L.T. AVATAR collection from autumn/winter 1997 to 1998 is featured in MoMu's Antwerp Six exhibition, which runs from March 2026 to January 2027, underlining his place in the history of Belgian fashion.
