What is Beatrix Ong?

Beatrix Ong is a British luxury accessories label from London, known above all for shoes. It was launched in 2002 by its namesake designer, who was born in London, grew up partly in Hong Kong and began her career as an intern at Harper's Bazaar in New York.

History

Before starting her own label, Ong became creative director of Jimmy Choo Couture at the age of 22, which earned her the press nickname "The New Choo". After the launch, The Independent named her one of the ten leading shoe designers in 2004. In 2004 she also opened her first shop in London.

In 2011 she was appointed MBE for services to the fashion industry, and in 2013 she joined British trade delegations to China to promote British creativity.

Products and positioning

The label offers luxury footwear and fashion accessories. It has worked on collaborations, including exclusive shoes designed for Dover Street Market in London, and one of its designs is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Why it matters

Beatrix Ong is part of the generation of London designers who built independent luxury footwear labels in the 2000s, alongside wider work promoting British design abroad.
