What is Manolo Blahnik?
Manolo Blahnik is a British luxury footwear house named after its founder and designer. It makes women's and men's shoes, bridal footwear, bags and small accessories, and is especially associated with elegant, slender stiletto heels.
History
Manolo Blahnik was born in 1942 in Santa Cruz de La Palma in the Canary Islands to a Czech father and a Spanish mother. After studying in Geneva and spending time in Paris, he was encouraged by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland in 1969 to concentrate on shoes. He settled in London, designed shoes for an Ossie Clark runway show in 1971 and then opened his first boutique on Old Church Street in Chelsea. A New York shop followed in 1983.
Blahnik is credited with reviving the thin stiletto heel at a time when platforms dominated. He won the CFDA and British Fashion Council accessory awards in 1990, received an honorary CBE in 2007, and was the subject of the 2017 documentary Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards.

Business model and distribution
Manolo Blahnik sells through its own boutiques in cities including London, New York, Geneva, Madrid, Dubai, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo, through its e-commerce site and through luxury department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2012 it announced a long-term agreement with Kurt Geiger to operate Manolo Blahnik boutiques. As early as 2000 it experimented with a virtual reality online showroom with Neiman Marcus.
Why it matters
