What is Christian Louboutin?
Christian Louboutin is a French luxury house best known for women's high heels with a glossy red sole. Headquartered in Paris, it designs footwear for women, men and children, as well as handbags, small leather goods, eyewear and beauty products.
History
Christian Louboutin opened his first boutique in 1991 in the Galerie Véro-Dodat, a nineteenth-century arcade in Paris. According to the house's own history, in 1992 he painted the sole of a prototype with red nail polish, creating the signature that defines the brand. The company expanded to New York in 1993, introduced its first handbag in 2003 and launched menswear in 2009. Christian Louboutin Beauty followed in 2014, starting with a red nail lacquer, and later added lipsticks and fragrances.
In March 2021 Exor acquired a minority stake of roughly a quarter of the company, giving the independent house a long-term investor while the founder retained control.
Products and positioning
Louboutin operates at the top of the luxury footwear market. Its core categories are:
- Women's pumps, sandals, boots and flats, including the Pigalle and So Kate
- Men's sneakers, loafers and boots
- Handbags and small leather goods
- Beauty: nail colour, lipstick, eye make-up and fragrance
- Bridal and children's collections
Business model and distribution
The house sells through its own boutiques in major cities, its e-commerce site and selected luxury department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The red sole is protected as a trademark in many countries, and the company has litigated over it in several jurisdictions, with mixed results, including a 2018 European Court of Justice ruling that a colour applied to a sole can be a valid mark.
Why it matters
Louboutin shows how a single, instantly recognisable design code can anchor a global luxury brand and support extension into new categories. Its long legal defence of the red sole has also shaped how colour trademarks are treated in fashion.
