What is Gianvito Rossi?

Gianvito Rossi is a luxury women's footwear and accessories house founded in Milan. Richemont describes it as a maison defined by elegance, femininity and modernity, with signature styles such as the Gianvito 105 pump and the Portofino sandal.

History

The brand was launched in 2006 by Gianvito Rossi, who grew up in a shoemaking family; his father Sergio Rossi founded the shoe label that bears his own name. The company's craftsmanship is rooted in the San Mauro Pascoli shoemaking district in Emilia-Romagna, one of Italy's best known clusters for luxury women's footwear.

On 28 July 2023 Richemont announced that it had acquired a controlling stake in the company for an undisclosed sum. Under the agreement Gianvito Rossi kept a shareholding and continued as creative director, developing the brand together with the Swiss group. Gianvito Rossi is now listed among Richemont's fashion and accessories maisons, alongside houses such as Chloé.

Products and positioning

The brand operates in the luxury segment and focuses on clean lines, refined materials and comfort. The range includes:

  • Pumps, including the signature 105 and 85 heights
  • Sandals and mules
  • Boots and ankle boots
  • Flats and sneakers
  • Handbags and small accessories

Business model and distribution

Gianvito Rossi sells through its own boutiques, its e-commerce site and selected luxury department stores and multi-brand retailers. Richemont states that the maison has a network of about 50 stores. Richemont's backing gives the brand access to group resources in retail real estate, logistics and international expansion.

Why it matters

Gianvito Rossi represents a rare independent Italian luxury shoe label built in the 2000s that reached global scale on design alone. Its acquisition by Richemont signalled the group's interest in expanding its fashion and accessories division with specialist, craft-led brands, and it gave Richemont a direct presence in high-end women's footwear.
