What is Buccellati?

Buccellati is an Italian maker of jewellery and watches, associated with goldsmithing and hand engraving. The current company, Buccellati Holding Italia S.p.A., was formed in 2011.

History

Mario Buccellati opened his first enterprise in 1919. In 1949 Pope Pius XII commissioned an icon for Princess Margaret, now held at the Chianciano Art Museum. After Mario's death in 1965, four of his five sons managed the firm. In 1971 one of the sons launched the Gianmaria Buccellati brand, and the two were merged into the current company in 2011.

Ownership

The investment fund Clessidra took the majority of the capital in 2013. Gansu Gangtai acquired 85 per cent in December 2016, and Richemont bought 100 per cent from Gansu Gangtai in September 2019.

Craft and products

Designs begin as life-size hand drawings, and hand-engraving techniques named rigato, telato, ornato and segrinato create textured gold and silver surfaces. The source describes craft methods rather than industrial technology.

Business model and distribution

Buccellati operates its own boutiques in Milan, Rome, Florence, New York (Fifth Avenue, since 1954), Palm Beach (Worth Avenue, since 1958), Paris (Place Vendome), London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and other locations, according to Wikipedia. Some of these listings, such as Moscow, may be historical and were not re-checked for 2026.

Why it matters

Buccellati is a clear case of an Italian family goldsmith house moving through private equity and Chinese ownership into the Richemont portfolio. Its leadership was not named in the source consulted and is not described here.
