What is Piaget?

Piaget is a Swiss luxury watchmaker and jeweller with headquarters in Geneva. It is a subsidiary of the Richemont group, which acquired the manufacture through the Vendome group in 1988.

History

Georges Edouard Piaget set up his first workshop on the family farm in the village of La Cote-aux-Fees in the Swiss Jura in 1874. His son Timothee Piaget took over in 1911, and the firm has focused on wristwatches since. The first boutique opened in 1959. A haute horlogerie manufacture opened in Plan-les-Ouates near Geneva in 2001, and the company marked its 150th anniversary in 2024.

Technology and watchmaking

Piaget built its reputation on ultra-thin movements:

  • Calibre 9P (1957), a hand-wound movement only 2 mm thick, launched with the Emperador
  • Calibre 7P (1976), a quartz movement launched during the quartz crisis
  • Altiplano 900P (2014), listed as the world's thinnest hand-wound mechanical watch at 3.65 mm
  • Calibre 600P (2002), described as the thinnest tourbillon movement at 3.5 mm

The Polo watch followed in 1979.

Business model and distribution

Wikipedia states that Piaget is present in about 80 countries and that its parts are made in Switzerland. As a Richemont maison it sells through its own boutiques and selected retailers.

Why it matters

Piaget combines watchmaking and jewellery under one name and is a documented leader in thin movement design. Yves Piaget is listed as president since 1980 and Chabi Nouri as chief executive in the source consulted, but these roles were not confirmed for 2026 and are not relied on here.
