What is Van Cleef & Arpels?

Van Cleef & Arpels is a French maison specialising in high jewellery, jewellery and watches, with perfumes as a smaller category. Its designs draw heavily on nature, couture and imaginary worlds, with flowers, animals and fairies as recurring themes. The house is part of Richemont's Jewellery Maisons and is led by chief executive Catherine Rénier, who took over in 2024 when her predecessor Nicolas Bos became group chief executive of Richemont.

History

The house grew out of the 1895 marriage of Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef. Alfred and his brother-in-law Salomon Arpels opened the first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme in Paris in 1906. A ruby and diamond rose bracelet won the grand prize at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, and Renée Puissant took over artistic direction in 1926.

In the 1930s the maison developed the Mystery Set, a technique in which stones are set without visible prongs. It opened a flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York in 1940 and created crowns for royal clients, including the coronation crown for Empress Farah Pahlavi in 1967. Richemont acquired the company in 1999.

Products and positioning

Van Cleef & Arpels sits in the luxury and high jewellery tier. Key lines include:

  • Alhambra, the four-leaf clover motif the maison calls its icon of luck
  • High jewellery collections using the Mystery Set technique
  • Poetic complication watches
  • Flower and animal clip brooches

The maison also supports L'École, School of Jewelry Arts, which offers courses and exhibitions on jewellery history and craft.

Business model and distribution

Distribution is tightly controlled. The house had about 155 locations in 2022, combining standalone boutiques in cities such as Paris, London, Geneva and Shanghai with boutiques inside selected department stores and independent retailers. It also sells online in several markets.

Why it matters

Van Cleef & Arpels shows how a single recognisable motif, the Alhambra clover, can anchor a jewellery business across price points while high jewellery maintains its prestige. Its rise inside Richemont has also produced the group's current chief executive, underlining its weight in the portfolio.
