Who is Johann Rupert?

Johann Rupert is a South African business leader and the chairman of Compagnie Financière Richemont, the Geneva-based luxury group whose houses include Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC and Chloé. Born in Stellenbosch in 1950, he founded Richemont in 1988 and remains its chairman, with the Rupert family controlling a majority of the voting rights.

Career

Rupert began his career in finance in New York, working for Chase Manhattan and Lazard Frères, before returning to South Africa and founding Rand Merchant Bank in 1979. He joined his father's Rembrandt Group in 1985. In 1988 Richemont was established to hold the group's international luxury and tobacco interests, and in the 1990s the tobacco and luxury businesses were separated, leaving Richemont focused on luxury goods.

Rupert has served as chairman of Richemont for most of its history, and at times also as chief executive. He took a sabbatical in 2013 and was reappointed chairman in September 2014. In September 2026 the board appointed his son Anton Rupert as a non-executive co-deputy chairman alongside Bram Schot, a move Johann Rupert described as an important step in long-term succession planning.

Influence on the fashion business

Under Rupert, Richemont has become the leading group in high jewellery, with Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels at its core. According to Luxury Tribune, jewellery houses accounted for around three quarters of group sales in the 2025 to 2026 financial year.

  • Focus on hard luxury, jewellery and watches
  • Long-term ownership and preference for organic brand building
  • Independence from the larger fashion conglomerates
  • Family control combined with a stock market listing

Johann Rupert and technology

Richemont was an early investor in luxury e-commerce. In 2010 it acquired full ownership of the online retailer Net-a-Porter, founded by Natalie Massenet, which later merged with Yoox to form Yoox Net-a-Porter. The group later agreed to sell the business to Mytheresa, a transaction completed in 2025, marking a step back from owning multi-brand online retail.

Why it matters

Rupert has built one of the three largest luxury groups while keeping it independent and centred on jewellery and watches rather than fashion. His approach to family stewardship, long-term brand investment and selective digital ventures offers a distinct model within the industry, and Richemont's succession planning will be closely followed by investors and partners.
