What is Community Clothing?
Community Clothing is a UK clothing brand and social enterprise founded in 2016 by Scottish designer Patrick Grant. It is based in Blackburn, Lancashire, and was launched with a Kickstarter campaign in early 2016 that raised more than £88,000.
History
Grant bought the Blackburn factory Cookson & Clegg in 2015, and the brand's first orders were made there. Today its clothes are produced in more than 30 UK factories, including several in some of the country's most economically deprived areas.
Products and positioning
The brand focuses on basic wardrobe staples that are not redesigned every season, with a short supply chain and low overheads. It uses deadstock fabric to reduce waste and keeps its markups well below those of comparable brands.
- Everyday basics for men and women
- Styles carried over season to season
- No sales and no Black Friday participation
Distribution
Community Clothing sells mainly through its own website, promoted chiefly via social media. It has also partnered with eBay, sold menswear through John Lewis from 2021 and run pop up shops, including at Selfridges.
Why it matters
Community Clothing is a prominent test case for reviving domestic garment manufacturing through a direct to consumer model, using steady volumes of simple products to keep UK factories busy.
