What is Gaastra Footwear?
Gaastra Footwear is the footwear range of Gaastra, a brand from the Netherlands whose design draws inspiration from the sea. In the mid-2010s Gaastra was described as part of the McGregor Fashion group.
History
Gaastra took direct control of its shoe segment in 2010, after it had been licensed to Footex. The aim was to align the shoe range with its home market in the Netherlands and with export markets including Germany, France, Belgium and Italy. For the spring and summer 2015 season, the shoe licence passed to Newport Footwear, a subsidiary of the Dutch company Star Collections, which handles design and distribution of the shoe models.
The shift in 2014 was described by the trade press as a change in direction for the brand, because it handed a category it had controlled itself back to an outside partner. Footwear for Gaastra is therefore mainly a licensing story.
Why it matters
Gaastra Footwear shows how a Dutch lifestyle brand has switched between running its footwear in-house and handing it to a specialist licensee.
