History

Frank John Smythson opened his first store at 133 New Bond Street, London, on 29 September 1887. In 1908 the company created its first Featherweight diary. Wikipedia lists later ownership changes:

  • 1950s: acquired by the John Menzies Group
  • 1998: management buyout led by Sarah Elton
  • 2009: sold to Greenwill SA for 18 million pounds
  • 2025: acquisition by Oakley Capital announced on 1 July, with the price undisclosed

Wikipedia describes Oakley Capital as a private equity firm owned by Peter Dubens. The New Bond Street flagship closed in April 2024.
