What is Yanko?
Yanko is a men's shoemaker from Mallorca, Spain, one of the island's historic footwear names. Yanko, Carmina and Meermin all stem from the original Albaladejo family shoe business, and the founders of Carmina and Meermin once worked at Yanko.
History
Yanko was a major force in the industry up to the 1980s, producing more than a million pairs of shoes a year. It ran into difficulty in the 1990s and went bankrupt. In 2007, a group of businessmen with footwear experience acquired the estate and rebuilt the company.
Products and positioning
Yanko makes classic men's footwear with traditional construction:
- Goodyear-welted soles, with closed channel soles and a bevelled waist on finer models
- French calfskin and British suede uppers
- Dress shoes, brogues, Chelsea boots and other boots
Alongside stock models, Yanko offers made-to-order shoes, a service also available through partner retailers.
Distribution
The brand is sold through specialist menswear and shoe retailers, including the Scandinavian retailer Skolyx, which offers patina services and exclusive versions.
Why it matters
