What is the Agent2Agent Protocol (A2A) in fashion?

The Agent2Agent Protocol (A2A) is an open standard that lets AI agents from different systems or companies discover each other, communicate and work together on tasks.

In short

The Agent2Agent Protocol, or A2A, is an open standard for communication between AI agents. It defines how agents built by different vendors describe their capabilities, send tasks to each other and return results, which could enable automated collaboration between brands, retailers and logistics partners.

How does it work in practice?

Each agent publishes a description of what it can do, often called an agent card, including skills, endpoints and authentication requirements. Another agent can read this description, send a task and receive updates or results. Tasks can be short requests or longer processes that report progress over time.

Possible fashion scenarios include:

  • A retailer's buying agent asking a brand's sales agent for available stock and wholesale prices.
  • A brand's planning agent requesting delivery dates from a logistics partner's agent.
  • A customer service agent passing a return case to a warehouse agent.
  • An internal merchandising agent delegating image tagging to a specialised agent.

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Fashion is a network business, with brands, agents, distributors, retailers, factories and logistics providers all exchanging information. Today much of this runs through email, spreadsheets, EDI and portals. If AI agents take over routine coordination, a common protocol avoids every partner building custom connections and makes cross-company automation more realistic.

How does AI use it?

A2A complements tool protocols like MCP. An agent might use MCP to access its own company's ERP and A2A to talk to an external partner's agent. Together they form the technical foundation for agentic commerce and multi-agent workflows.

Common pitfalls

  • Trust and authority. Businesses must define what another company's agent may request or commit to.
  • Security. Authentication, data sharing and logging need careful design.
  • Early maturity. Standards are still evolving, so pilots should stay flexible.
  • Data quality. Agents exchanging poor data simply automate errors faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A2A and MCP?

MCP connects an AI agent to tools and data sources. A2A connects agents to other agents, allowing them to delegate tasks and collaborate across systems or organisations.

Will A2A replace EDI in fashion wholesale?

Not in the near term. EDI remains established for structured transactions such as orders and dispatch notices, while A2A may add flexible, conversational coordination on top of existing processes.
