What is a colourway in fashion?

A specific colour combination in which a style is produced and offered.

In short

A colourway is a specific colour combination in which a style is produced and offered. One design, such as a trainer or a knit, can come in several colourways, each with its own style colour code, imagery and order data, and buyers choose which colourways to stock.

How does it work in practice?

During product development, the design team defines a base style and then develops several colour options for it, often mixing core colours that carry over from season to season with a few seasonal or fashion colours. Each approved option becomes a colourway with its own code, lab dips, samples and photography.

In the showroom and in wholesale catalogues, the colourways of a style are usually shown side by side. Buyers then decide which ones fit their customers, their store format and the rest of their assortment, and order sizes for each chosen colourway separately.

Why does it matter?

Colourways let a brand extend the life and appeal of a successful design without the cost of creating an entirely new style. They also have commercial consequences:

  • Each colourway adds SKUs, samples and minimum order quantities
  • Core colourways often sell steadily and may be offered as never-out-of-stock items
  • Seasonal colourways create newness and drive full price sales
  • Too many options can split demand and leave every colourway underbought

How is AI changing it?

Generative AI can render a style in many colour options before any physical sample exists, helping teams review colourways earlier and reduce sampling. Analytics on past sell-through can indicate which colour families performed for similar styles, and image recognition can tag colours consistently across product data.

Common pitfalls

  • Inconsistent colour names across PLM, ERP and the B2B catalogue
  • Product images that do not match the colour of the delivered goods
  • Adding colourways for range breadth without enough orders to meet minimums
  • Forgetting that each colourway needs its own size curve

Frequently asked questions

Is colourway the same as colour?

Not quite. A colourway describes the full colour combination of a style, which can include several colours on the upper, sole, trims or print. Colour usually refers to a single shade.

How many colourways should a style have?

There is no fixed rule. The right number depends on expected demand, minimum order quantities and how distinct each option is from the others in the assortment.
