What is a proto sample in fashion?

The first physical sample of a new design, made to check the overall look, proportions and construction before fit and sales samples.

In short

A proto sample, short for prototype sample, is the first physical version of a new garment design. It is made from the tech pack to evaluate silhouette, proportions, details and construction, often in substitute materials, and it decides whether and how the style moves forward in development.

How does it work in practice?

Once a tech pack is ready, the supplier or in-house sample room cuts a first pattern and sews the proto, usually in the base sample size. Designers and technical teams review it, often on a dress form or fit model, and record comments on shape, length, details and workmanship. The supplier then updates the pattern for the next round. Some styles need several proto rounds before moving into fit sampling.

  • Check proportions and design intent
  • Validate construction methods
  • Identify cost drivers early
  • Decide whether to continue, change or drop the style

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

The proto stage is the cheapest point to change a design. Decisions made here affect cost, lead time and fit later in the process. Dropping weak styles at the proto stage saves money that would otherwise be spent on sales samples and photography for products that may never be ordered by buyers.

How is AI changing it?

Many brands now create a digital proto in 3D software before or instead of the first physical sample. Avatars show drape and proportions, and changes can be made in minutes. AI tools can also generate pattern suggestions from sketches or past styles, and compare new designs with best-selling blocks. The physical proto is then used mainly to confirm fabric behaviour and construction.

Common pitfalls

Teams sometimes give too many detailed fit comments on a proto made in the wrong fabric, which leads to confusion later. Another risk is unclear communication about which issues are design decisions and which are technical corrections, causing repeated rounds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a proto sample and a fit sample?

A proto sample tests the overall design and construction for the first time. A fit sample follows later and focuses on measurements and how the garment fits the body, ideally in the correct fabric.

Does a proto sample have to be in the final fabric?

No. Proto samples are often made in substitute fabric because the final material may not be available yet. The aim is to evaluate the design rather than the final material.
