What is ship-from-store in fashion retail?

A fulfilment model in which online orders are picked, packed and shipped from physical stores instead of a central warehouse.

In short

Ship-from-store means fulfilling online orders directly from a retail store's stock. Store staff pick and pack the items and hand them to a carrier, so the whole store network acts as distributed warehouses for ecommerce.

How does it work in practice?

An order management system checks stock across warehouses and stores when an online order arrives. Based on rules such as availability, distance, store workload and cost, it assigns the order to a location. Store staff receive the order on a device, pick the items, pack them and print shipping labels. The carrier collects parcels from the store. Some orders are split across several locations if no single site has all items.

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Fashion stock is fragmented across sizes and colours. Ship-from-store makes a single remaining size in a store available to online customers, increasing full-price sell-through and reducing end-of-season markdowns. It can also speed delivery in cities. Costs include store labour, packaging and potentially higher shipping per parcel, and the model only works if store inventory data is accurate. It also gives stores a role in the online business, which can strengthen cooperation between channels.

How is AI changing it?

AI-driven order orchestration chooses the best fulfilment location by weighing stock, delivery promises, costs and the likelihood that an item will sell in store at full price. Forecasting models help decide how much stock stores should hold for online demand. Computer vision and RFID improve stock accuracy, reducing cancellations when staff cannot find an item.

Common pitfalls

  • Poor store inventory accuracy causing cancellations.
  • Store teams overwhelmed during peak trading.
  • Split shipments that increase costs.
  • Incentive schemes that do not credit stores for online fulfilment.

Frequently asked questions
