What is a size set sample in fashion?

A set of samples in several or all sizes of a style, used to check that grading is correct before bulk production.

In short

A size set sample is a group of garments made in multiple sizes of the same style, typically the full range or the smallest, base and largest sizes. It is used to confirm that the graded patterns produce correct measurements and good fit in every size before bulk production begins.

How does it work in practice?

After the base size fit is approved, the pattern is graded according to the brand's grading rules. The factory produces one garment per size, ideally in production fabric and trims. The technical team measures each piece against the size specification, checks tolerances and tries key sizes on fit models. Corrections are fed back into the graded patterns before the pre-production sample.

  • Measure every point of measure per size
  • Check proportions, such as pocket placement, in extreme sizes
  • Confirm that size labels and barcodes match

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Grading errors often only show up in sizes that were never sampled, and they become visible when retailers receive complaints or high returns in specific sizes. Size sets protect the whole size curve that buyers order, not just the base size. For brands selling online, consistent sizing across styles is also important for reducing returns and building customer trust.

How is AI changing it?

3D simulation can check graded patterns virtually on avatars of different sizes, reducing the number of physical size sets. AI models can analyse return reasons and fit feedback by size to identify grading issues in previous seasons, so rules can be adjusted. Some tools also automate measurement of samples with computer vision.

Common pitfalls

Skipping size sets to save time is a common risk, especially under calendar pressure. Using fabric that differs from bulk can hide shrinkage issues. Another pitfall is checking measurements only, without trying the extreme sizes on bodies.

Frequently asked questions

Does every style need a size set sample?

Not always. Carry-over styles with proven patterns may skip it, but new styles, new blocks and new suppliers usually require a size set to avoid grading errors.

Which sizes are included in a size set?

It varies by brand. Some request the full size range, others only the smallest, base and largest sizes, which reveal most grading problems at lower cost.
