Who is Christiane Arp?

Christiane Arp, born in 1961, is a German journalist and fashion executive. She was editor-in-chief of Vogue Germany from March 2003 until early 2021 and is chairwoman of Fashion Council Germany, which she co-founded in 2015. In July 2025 FashionUnited identified her as the council's chairwoman (Vorstandsvorsitzende), alongside chief executive Scott Lipinski.

Career

Arp studied fashion design at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg and worked as a stylist for international fashion productions. She held positions at German titles including Brigitte, Viva!, Für Sie, Amica and Stern before joining Vogue Germany.

As editor-in-chief she used the magazine to promote German design. In 2011 she established the Vogue Salon at Berlin Fashion Week, a showcase for emerging German designers. She announced her departure from Vogue with the January/February 2021 edition. In 2019 she co-curated the Munich exhibition Ist das Mode oder kann das weg!?.

Influence on the fashion business

Fashion Council Germany was founded to promote German fashion design internationally and to establish it as a cultural asset. Since 2023 the council has taken a leading role in transforming Berlin Fashion Week. According to FashionUnited's 2025 interview with its leadership, this work includes:

  • Coordinating the programme, guest management and international visitors
  • Designer competitions with prize money of €25,000 for runway shows and €5,000 for retail concepts
  • New formats such as Raum.Berlin, allowing brands to present without a traditional runway show
  • Delegation trips to cities such as New York and Seoul to connect designers with press, buyers and retailers
  • Mentoring on distribution, agency relationships and market entry

Arp has described a three year plan designed first to win international media attention for Berlin and then to bring in buyers once the event had established credibility, a sequence that reflects how fashion weeks build commercial relevance.

Why it matters

Germany is a major European fashion market but has historically had a limited international profile in designer fashion. Arp's move from magazine editor to industry body leader shows how editorial networks can be applied to building infrastructure for designers. For brands, retailers and wholesale buyers, the council's work on Berlin Fashion Week is a key factor in whether German designers gain international visibility and stockists.
