Who is Cyrille Vigneron?
Cyrille Vigneron, born in France in 1961, is one of the best known executives in the jewellery and watch industry. A graduate of ESCP Europe, he spent most of his career with Cartier and its parent company Richemont, and led Cartier for more than eight years. Since 1 September 2024 he has been chairman of Cartier Culture and Philanthropy.
Career
After early roles at Compagnie Générale des Eaux and Pechiney, Vigneron joined Richemont in 1988. He held a series of senior positions in Asia and Europe, building a deep familiarity with the Japanese market, which he has also written about in a book on contemporary Japan published in 2009.
- Cartier Japan: managing director, 1997 to 2002
- Richemont Japan: president, 2002 to 2005
- Cartier Europe: managing director, 2005 to 2013
- LVMH Japan: president, 2014 to 2015
- Cartier: president and chief executive, January 2016 to August 2024
- Cartier Culture and Philanthropy: chairman since September 2024
His return to Richemont was announced in November 2015, when Stanislas de Quercize stepped down as Cartier chief executive. Johann Rupert, Richemont's chairman, welcomed Vigneron as an old colleague and a highly capable and effective leader. Vigneron also joined Richemont's board in 2016 and sat on the group's senior executive committee between 2019 and 2022.
Influence on the fashion business
Cartier is the anchor of Richemont's jewellery division and one of the most valuable brands in luxury. Vigneron led the maison for more than eight years across jewellery, watches and accessories. He was succeeded as chief executive by Louis Ferla, who now sits on Richemont's senior executive committee as head of Cartier.
Vigneron has also been a prominent voice for Cartier's commitments beyond product, including the Cartier Women's Initiative, a programme supporting women entrepreneurs, where he has appeared as a speaker.
Why it matters
Vigneron's career illustrates the typical path of a modern luxury chief executive: long experience in key regional markets, particularly Japan, a period at a rival group and a return to lead a flagship maison. His shift from operational leadership to a role focused on culture and philanthropy also reflects how major luxury houses increasingly treat cultural patronage as a strategic function in its own right.
