Who is Donald Tang?

Donald Tang, born in Shanghai in 1963, moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and became a United States citizen. He spent most of his career in investment banking before turning to media and, from 2022, to fashion as a senior executive of Shein, the online fast fashion group founded by Xu Yangtian (Sky Xu). As executive chairman he became the company's most visible spokesperson outside China.

Career

Tang graduated in chemical engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, in 1986. He worked at Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers before joining Bear Stearns in 1992. His key roles include:

  • 1993 to 2001: president, chief executive and chairman of Bear Stearns Asia
  • 2001: vice chairman of the Bear Stearns board
  • 2015: founded Tang Media Partners, a Los Angeles and Shanghai based media holding company
  • November 2022: joined Shein as executive vice chairman
  • August 2023 to July 2026: executive chairman of Shein
  • Since July 2026: senior adviser to Shein

Influence on the fashion business

Tang's appointment gave Shein, a company known for the low profile of its founder, a Western facing leader at a time of intense political and regulatory attention. According to reporting in July 2026, he liaised with politicians, regulators and investors, represented the company at public events and argued for improvements in compliance. He also defended Shein against allegations concerning its supply chain and products sold on its marketplace, and lobbied for the removal of customs duty exemptions on low value parcels, a policy that had benefited cross border e-commerce.

His period as executive chairman coincided with Shein's long preparations for a stock market listing. In July 2026 it was reported that Tang would step down as the company's Hong Kong IPO neared completion, with Sky Xu taking over as chairman and leading the investor roadshow. Tang moved to a senior adviser role with no fixed timeline.

Donald Tang and technology

Shein's model is built on online demand data and rapid, small batch production, which places technology at the centre of the business Tang represented. His own documented role, however, was primarily external: government relations, regulatory compliance and investor communication rather than product or technology development.

Why it matters

Donald Tang's tenure illustrates how a digital native fashion platform used an experienced Western financier to manage geopolitical and regulatory risk. His departure as chairman marked a new phase for Shein as it moved towards public markets.
