Elio Fiorucci

Who is Elio Fiorucci?
Elio Fiorucci was born in Milan in 1935 and died there in 2015 at the age of 80. He began working in his father's shoe shop at 14. Rather than a couturier, he was above all a retail innovator and brand builder who sensed early how youth culture, music and art could be turned into a store experience.
Career
In 1967 he opened his first shop in the Galleria Passarella in Milan, selling clothes by London designers and pieces inspired by the hippie movement to a young audience. In 1970 he created the Fiorucci label, with a logo of two Victorian-style cherubs wearing sunglasses that became one of the most recognisable brand marks of its time.
- 1967: opens his first store in Milan
- 1970: launches the Fiorucci label
- 1976: opens a New York store on East 59th Street
- 1980s: stores on the King's Road in London and Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles
- 1990: the brand is sold to the Japanese group Edwin International
The brand became known for stretch denim cut to fit closely, animal prints, bright colours and graphic accessories. His New York store, which opened in 1976, was nicknamed the daytime Studio 54 and attracted artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
Influence on the fashion business
Fiorucci anticipated several ideas that later became central to fashion retail: the store as a cultural venue, collaborations with artists, the power of a playful logo, and a fast-changing mix of products aimed at young consumers. At its peak his Milan store was reported to attract up to 10,000 visitors on a Saturday.
In 1990 he sold the brand to the Japanese company Edwin International. His original Milan store closed in 2003, and he went on to launch a new label, Love Therapy. Milan's Triennale design museum later honoured him with a retrospective of his work.
Why it matters
Fiorucci is often cited as a forerunner of concept stores and of today's streetwear and pop-culture brands. His work shows how retail spaces, community and a strong visual identity can build a fashion business that is as much about culture and entertainment as about product.
