Christian Dior

Founder of the House of Dior

Who is Christian Dior?

Christian Dior was born in Normandy in 1905 and died in 1957. Although he designed under his own name for only about a decade, he is one of the most influential figures in fashion history. His first collection, presented in the spring of 1947, introduced a silhouette of rounded shoulders, a cinched waist and a very full skirt that the press quickly named the New Look.

Career

Dior moved to Paris as a child, studied political science and served in the military before turning to fashion. His design career began in 1935, when he sold sketches in Paris. He then worked for Robert Piguet from 1938 and for Lucien Lelong during the war years.

In 1946 he founded his own house with the backing of the textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac. The debut collection of 1947 celebrated femininity and luxury after years of wartime restrictions on fabric, and it made Dior an international name almost overnight.

  • 1947: first collection, the New Look
  • By 1948: licensing agreements for furs, stockings and perfumes
  • 1950s: named silhouettes such as the Tulip, the Figure 8 and the A-line
  • 1957: death of Dior; Yves Saint Laurent becomes head designer

Influence on the fashion business

Dior's most lasting business contribution was licensing. By 1948 he had arranged agreements for furs, stockings and perfumes, extending the reach of the couture name far beyond the salon and turning the brand into a household name. This model of a couture house earning revenue from licensed products and fragrance became a cornerstone of the luxury industry, and the debates it later provoked about brand control still inform how houses manage their names today.

He also institutionalised the idea of the seasonal collection built around a named silhouette, giving the press and buyers a clear story each season. That rhythm of themed collections remains the basis of the fashion calendar.

Why it matters

Dior combined creative vision with industrial backing and commercial ambition at a decisive moment for Paris fashion. The house he founded became one of the pillars of the modern luxury sector, and its creative directorship remains one of the most closely watched appointments in fashion. Jonathan Anderson has led the house's men's, women's and couture collections since 2025, continuing a lineage that began with Dior's successor, Yves Saint Laurent.
