What is Dior?

Dior is a French luxury house spanning haute couture, ready-to-wear, leather goods, jewellery and beauty. Its fashion activities are run by Christian Dior Couture, part of LVMH, with Delphine Arnault as chairman and chief executive since 2023. Jonathan Anderson became creative director of men's collections in April 2025 and of all collections, including womenswear and haute couture, in June 2025.

History

Christian Dior founded the house in December 1946 at 30 Avenue Montaigne with the backing of textile industrialist Marcel Boussac. His first show on 12 February 1947 introduced the New Look and its Bar jacket, credited with reviving Paris couture. After his death in 1957 the house was led in turn by Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri for women and Kim Jones for men. Bernard Arnault took control in 1984, and the couture business became Christian Dior Couture in 1995.

Products and positioning

Dior operates at the top of the luxury market. Signature products include the Bar jacket, the Saddle bag introduced in 2000, fine jewellery and fragrances such as Miss Dior, Eau Sauvage and J'adore. Beauty is a major source of brand visibility alongside fashion.

Business model and distribution

The house sells primarily through directly operated boutiques, with LVMH citing 280 Dior fashion boutiques worldwide, plus e-commerce and beauty counters in department stores. Its flagship and headquarters remain at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris.

The house also owns significant archives and heritage sites, and its Paris flagship at 30 Avenue Montaigne combines boutique, ateliers and exhibition space.

Why it matters

Dior is one of LVMH's most important fashion houses and a reference point for couture, leather goods and beauty under one name. The 2025 move to a single creative director across all lines is a significant strategic shift for one of the most closely followed houses in luxury.
