What is Louis Vuitton?
Louis Vuitton is a French luxury house best known for leather goods, luggage and its Monogram canvas. It is the flagship maison of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton and is led by Pietro Beccari, chairman and chief executive since 2023. Nicolas Ghesquière has designed the women's collections since 2013, and Pharrell Williams has been men's creative director since 2023.
History
Louis Vuitton opened his first store in Paris in 1854 as a specialist in packing and trunk making. In 1858 he introduced flat-topped canvas trunks that could be stacked, a practical innovation for rail and steamship travel. The Damier canvas followed in 1888 and the Monogram canvas in 1896, created by his son Georges partly to counter counterfeiting. The company merged into LVMH in 1987. In 1997 Marc Jacobs was named artistic director and introduced ready-to-wear, and Virgil Abloh led menswear from 2018 until his death in 2021.
Products and positioning
The house sits at the top of the luxury market. Its core remains leather goods, with long-running lines such as the Keepall (1930), Noé (1932), Speedy and Neverfull (2007), and leathers such as Epi and Taiga. Around this it sells ready-to-wear, shoes, watches, jewellery and fragrance, and in 2025 it launched a beauty line, La Beauté Louis Vuitton.
Business model and distribution
Louis Vuitton sells mainly through its own boutiques, complemented by e-commerce and a limited number of shop-in-shops in high-end department stores. Production is largely in-house: LVMH reports 17 leather goods workshops in France, with an average of around 250 operations to make a single bag.
Louis Vuitton and technology
- 2019: partnership with Riot Games on digital assets for League of Legends.
- 2020: a virtual runway with 360-degree views.
- 2021: Louis the Game, a mobile game with collectible NFTs aimed at younger customers.
Why it matters
As LVMH's largest fashion brand, Louis Vuitton sets standards for pricing power, controlled distribution and in-house manufacturing across luxury. Its strategy of tightly managed own retail and limited wholesale is widely studied by other houses.
