What is Loewe?

Loewe is a luxury brand from Madrid specialising in leather goods, ready-to-wear and fragrance. It belongs to LVMH. Since 2025 its creative directors have been Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the American founders of Proenza Schouler, who succeeded Jonathan Anderson.

History

Loewe traces its origins to a collective of leather artisans in Madrid in 1846, which German craftsman Enrique Loewe y Roessberg consolidated under his name in 1872. The first Madrid store opened in 1892 and the house became a royal supplier in 1905. It opened in London in 1963 and in New York in 1983. LVMH took over international distribution in 1986 and became sole owner in 1996. Jonathan Anderson, creative director from 2013 to 2025, made craft, art and the Puzzle bag central to the brand and sharply raised its profile.

Products and positioning

  • Leather goods: the core business, including the Puzzle bag introduced in 2015.
  • Ready-to-wear for women and men, shown in Paris.
  • Fragrance: Loewe Perfumes sits within LVMH's perfumes and cosmetics business.
  • Craft and culture: the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize and the Loewe art and design collection.

Business model and distribution

Loewe sells through its own Casa Loewe stores, around 150 worldwide according to LVMH, supported by e-commerce and selected department stores. Headquarters and ateliers are in Madrid, with design and other teams in Paris.

Craft is also central to Loewe's cultural programme. The Loewe Foundation, created in 1988, launched the annual Loewe Foundation Craft Prize in 2017 to recognise contemporary artisans, and in 2026 the house began a four-year travelwear partnership with the Spain national football team.

Why it matters

Loewe is a case study in how a heritage leather house can be reinvented through a strong creative vision and an emphasis on craft. The handover from Anderson to McCollough and Hernandez is one of the most closely watched creative successions in luxury.
