Who is Jack McCollough?

Jack McCollough is an American fashion designer who works in a long-standing partnership with Lazaro Hernandez. Together they founded Proenza Schouler in New York in 2002 and, since 2025, have been co-creative directors of Loewe, succeeding Jonathan Anderson.

Career

McCollough met Hernandez at Parsons School of Design in New York, where they designed their senior thesis collection together. The whole collection was bought by Barneys New York, an unusual start that led directly to the founding of Proenza Schouler in 2002.

The label grew quickly. It won the inaugural CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2004 and the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2007, 2011 and 2013. Its ownership changed several times: the Valentino Fashion Group took a 45 per cent stake in 2007, other investors followed, and in 2018 the founders bought back shares from Castanea Partners to regain control.

In January 2025 McCollough and Hernandez announced they would stop designing Proenza Schouler while remaining on its board and as shareholders. Loewe then named them co-creative directors after Jonathan Anderson's eleven-year tenure ended in March 2025. Proenza Schouler appointed Rachel Scott as its creative director in August 2025.

At Proenza Schouler the duo became known for precise tailoring, inventive fabric manipulation and a mix of polished minimalism with a more subversive edge. The brand's handbags, which earned them the CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year award in 2009, gave the business an important second pillar alongside ready-to-wear.

Influence on the fashion business

McCollough's career with Hernandez illustrates several business themes:

  • Building an independent American luxury brand with wholesale support from department stores
  • Using accessories, notably handbags, to broaden a ready-to-wear business
  • Managing repeated changes of investors while retaining creative control
  • Moving from founder-designers to creative leaders of a group-owned house

Their move to Loewe is one of several 2025 appointments in which LVMH placed experienced independent designers at the head of its brands.

Why it matters

Design duos are rare at the top of the luxury industry. McCollough and Hernandez's transition from an American independent label to a major European house tests whether a creative partnership developed over more than two decades can be transferred to a brand with very different heritage, scale and craft traditions.
