Who was Jeanne Lanvin?
Jeanne Lanvin was a French fashion designer, born in 1867 and died in 1946. She founded the house of Lanvin, which is widely described as one of the longest-operating fashion houses in France. Her romantic, richly decorated designs appealed to a wealthy international clientele.
Career
Lanvin opened a millinery business on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris in 1889. After the birth of her daughter Marguerite in 1897 she began designing children's clothes, which attracted the attention of her clients. This helped her build a growing womenswear business alongside the children's line.
In 1909 she joined the Syndicat de la Couture, formally establishing herself as a couturière. Over the following years she expanded into an unusually broad range of categories. In 1920 she set up a decoration department for interiors, and in 1923 she opened a dye factory in Nanterre to control colours. The house added menswear, furs and lingerie, and in 1924 she founded Lanvin Parfums. In 1927 she launched the fragrance Arpège.
Arpège, created for the house's perfume business, was reportedly inspired by the sound of her daughter practising scales on the piano and became one of the best-known French fragrances of its era. Lanvin's achievements were recognised by the French state, which made her a member of the Legion of Honour in 1926 and promoted her in 1938. Through the 1920s and 1930s she managed a house that dressed clients from childhood to adulthood and furnished their homes as well.
Influence on the fashion business
Jeanne Lanvin's company was an early example of a vertically integrated, multi-category fashion business:
- Own production of dyes to secure distinctive colours
- Children's, women's and men's fashion under one name
- Interior design as a brand extension
- Fragrance as a long-term source of revenue and recognition
After her death the house passed through several owners. It is now part of Lanvin Group, a luxury fashion group headquartered in Shanghai and Milan whose brands also include Sergio Rossi and St. John Knits.
Why it matters
Jeanne Lanvin built a house that has outlasted most of its contemporaries. Her strategy of family-oriented collections, control over materials and careful diversification anticipated the lifestyle brands of today, and the survival of Lanvin shows the long-term value of a strong heritage name.
