Who is John Donahoe?

John Donahoe, born in 1960, is an American business leader who has run companies in consulting, e-commerce, enterprise software and sportswear. In fashion he is best known as chief executive of Nike, the world's largest sportswear company, from 13 January 2020 to 12 October 2024. He holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Career

Donahoe spent two decades at Bain & Company, rising from associate consultant to president and chief executive. In 2005 he joined eBay as president of eBay Marketplaces and was chief executive from 2008 to 2015, a period in which the company made more than 40 acquisitions including StubHub. In February 2017 he became president and chief executive of ServiceNow.

He joined Nike as chief executive in January 2020 and stepped down in October 2024, when he was succeeded by Elliott Hill, a long time Nike executive. In September 2025 he became director and chair of athletics at Stanford University. He has also served as chairman of PayPal's board.

Influence on the fashion business

Donahoe's Nike tenure became one of the most debated strategy cases in the apparel industry:

  • Navigating the Covid 19 pandemic by leaning on e-commerce capabilities
  • Reducing reliance on wholesale partners in favour of direct sales
  • Treating digital as central to the brand's relationship with consumers

The approach delivered strong online growth during the pandemic, but the reduction of wholesale partners was later seen as having cost Nike market share in its core footwear business as competitors gained shelf space.

John Donahoe and technology

Donahoe's background at eBay and ServiceNow made him one of the most technology oriented leaders a major sportswear company has appointed. His arrival was seen as positioning Nike to expand beyond sportswear and operate more like a technology company, with data, apps and digital channels at the centre of the business.

Why it matters

Donahoe's period at Nike is a reference case for the limits of direct to consumer strategies. Brands across fashion study it when deciding how to balance their own digital channels with wholesale partnerships, and how far a technology mindset can be applied to a product and brand led business. His career, spanning consulting, online marketplaces, enterprise software and sportswear, is also an example of how fashion companies have looked outside the industry for leadership in the digital era.
