Who is Jun Takahashi?
Jun Takahashi, born on 21 September 1969 in Kiryū in Gunma Prefecture, is the founder and designer of Undercover, one of the most respected Japanese fashion labels of its generation. Mentored by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, he has built a body of work that moves between streetwear and conceptual runway fashion. He is based in Tokyo.
Career
Takahashi enrolled at Bunka Fashion College in 1988. In 1993 he founded Undercover as a high end streetwear label and, with Nigo, opened the store Nowhere in Ura-Harajuku, a key address in the development of Japanese street fashion. Undercover took part in Tokyo Fashion Week in the mid 1990s and a Nowhere flagship opened in 1995. The Paris boutique Colette featured his work in 1998.
Undercover made its Paris Fashion Week debut with the Spring/Summer 2003 season in 2002. Takahashi received the Mainichi Fashion Award New Face Prize in 1997 and its Grand Prize in 2001 and 2013.
Influence on the fashion business
Takahashi's early collections drew heavily on punk, and The Business of Fashion notes that his aesthetic remains subversive but has gained technicality and clarity over time. His shows are known for unconventional staging, from identical twins in almost identical outfits to models whose faces are hidden by flower arrangements. Alongside the runway, he has developed partnerships that brought his designs to a broad audience:
- Nike x Undercover Gyakusou, a running and activewear line for men and women
- Uniqlo Undercover, a collaboration since 2011
- Artwork and animation for a 2021 remix of Radiohead's Creep with Thom Yorke
He is also known for practical attention to performance, testing outerwear in demanding conditions, which reflects his own interest in running.
Why it matters
Takahashi helped prove that a label rooted in Tokyo street culture could earn a permanent place on the Paris calendar. His collaborations with Nike and Uniqlo showed early how designer credibility and mass market reach can reinforce each other, a model now common across fashion. Together with peers such as Nigo, he shaped the global influence of Japanese streetwear. His continued presence in Paris more than two decades after his debut also demonstrates the durability of an independent, founder led label.
