What is Undercover?
Undercover is a Japanese fashion label founded by Jun Takahashi, born in Kiryu, Gunma. The French Fashion Federation (FHCM) lists it with a founding year of 1990 and describes it as a fusion of street fashion, art and music subcultures that began in Tokyo's underground scene. Wikipedia dates the launch of the high-end streetwear label to 1993.
History
In 1993 Takahashi also launched the retail venture Nowhere in Ura-Harajuku with Nigo, and a Nowhere company store opened in Harajuku in 1995. He showed at Tokyo Fashion Week in 1994 and 1995, and Undercover debuted at Paris Fashion Week in October 2002 for spring/summer 2003. Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons became his mentor and encouraged him to move to Paris. He won Mainichi fashion awards in 1997 (New Face), 2001 and 2013.
Products and positioning
The label produces menswear and womenswear and is positioned as high-end designer fashion with a punk, art and music influence. The FHCM lists womenswear and menswear collections for autumn/winter 2026 to 2027 and spring/summer 2027 in Paris, so the brand is active on the current calendar.
