What is Sacai?

Sacai is a Tokyo based designer label known for reworking classic garments into hybrid forms, such as knitwear combined with delicate woven fabrics. The brand says its designs are meant for many everyday situations rather than only special occasions, and Vogue has cited it as influential in blurring the line between casual and formal clothing.

History

Chitose Abe, who worked as a pattern cutter at Comme des Garçons and later for Junya Watanabe, founded sacai in Tokyo in 1999. Menswear followed with the Spring and Summer 2009 collection, and the women's line made its Paris runway debut in October 2009. Both collections are now presented in Paris each season.

In September 2011 the brand opened its flagship in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, in a building designed by architect Sou Fujimoto. Flagships in Hong Kong, Beijing and Seoul followed.

Products and positioning

  • Ready-to-wear: womenswear, menswear and sacai Classics
  • Accessories: bags, wallets, hats, jewellery and shoes
  • Collaborations: partners have included Nike, The North Face, Apple, A.P.C. and Dior

Collaborations, especially with Nike footwear, have brought the label to a much broader audience than its runway collections alone.

Business model and distribution

Sacai is a private company. It sells through its own flagship stores, its official online store and stockists worldwide, with collaborations acting as an important driver of awareness. Its menswear and womenswear are built on the same design philosophy and are shown side by side in Paris, which allows buyers and press to see the brand as one coherent world rather than separate businesses.

Why it matters

Sacai is a leading example of a mid sized independent designer brand that uses collaborations strategically to extend its reach while keeping a distinct design signature. Its hybrid approach to garments has shaped the wider market's mix of tailoring and sportswear, and its path from Comme des Garçons pattern cutter to founder of a global label shows how Japanese design training continues to feed the industry.
