Who was Oscar de la Renta?

Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic on 22 July 1932 and died on 20 October 2014, aged 82. He held both Dominican and American citizenship and became one of the central figures of American fashion in the second half of the twentieth century. He first became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy, and his house later dressed First Ladies including Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.

Career

De la Renta studied painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and apprenticed with Cristóbal Balenciaga. In 1961 he joined Antonio del Castillo as a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris. In 1963 he moved to New York to work for Elizabeth Arden, then joined the Jane Derby house, which he took over in 1965 after the founder's death. This became the base for his own label.

Key milestones in his career include:

  • Coty Awards in 1967 and 1968 and induction into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1973
  • Presidency of the CFDA from 1973 to 1976 and again from 1986 to 1988
  • Expansion into fragrance, accessories and home furnishings from 1977
  • Haute couture for Balmain from 1993 to 2002, the first Dominican to design for a French couture house
  • The CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990

Influence on the fashion business

De la Renta's work combined European couture technique with an American sense of glamour and ease. He was known for meticulous craftsmanship and for a wide range of silhouettes, from daywear to ball gowns, often with floral embroidery, appliqué and botanical prints. Spanish art and dress, from lace to the embellishment of matador costumes, were a lasting influence. He summed up his philosophy simply: "Fashion is only fashion once a woman puts it on."

By extending his name into fragrance, accessories and home, he built a lifestyle brand on the foundation of eveningwear, a model many American designers followed. His house, headquartered on Madison Avenue, opened boutiques around the world and remains active after his death.

Why it matters

De la Renta helped establish New York as a credible centre for luxury fashion rather than only for sportswear. His long association with political and cultural leaders made the brand part of American public life, and his leadership of the CFDA helped shape the industry's institutions. For brand builders, his career remains a reference for how couture credibility can underpin a broad, durable business.
