Who is Sonia Rykiel?
Sonia Rykiel was born in 1930 and died in Paris in 2016 at the age of 86. Without formal fashion training, she began at 17 as a window dresser in a Paris textile shop. She went on to build a fashion house that defined a relaxed, intellectual and feminine Parisian style for half a century.
Career
Rykiel started designing for her husband's Paris boutique, Laura, in the early 1960s. In 1962 she created the Poor Boy sweater, a close-fitting knit with high armholes. It gained wide attention when Elle magazine put Françoise Hardy in a striped Rykiel sweater on its cover in December 1963, and clients such as Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot followed.
- 1962: designs the Poor Boy sweater
- 1968: opens her own boutique and house on the Left Bank
- 1972: Women's Wear Daily calls her the Queen of Knits
- 2008: a retrospective tribute marks 40 years of her house
In 1968 she opened her own boutique on the Left Bank, formally establishing the Sonia Rykiel label. Her signature stripes, black clothes, slogans on sweaters and technical choices such as seams on the outside and unfinished hems became known as a philosophy of démode, freeing clothes from unnecessary linings and structure.
Influence on the fashion business
Rykiel helped turn knitwear from a utilitarian category into a fashion statement and helped establish the Left Bank as a centre of Paris fashion. Her daughter Nathalie Rykiel later became president of the company. In 2012 the Hong Kong-based First Heritage Brands acquired a majority stake, and the family sold its remaining shares in 2016.
The house entered receivership and was liquidated in 2019, after which the brand changed hands more than once, illustrating how difficult it can be to sustain a founder-led house once the founder and family step away.
Why it matters
Rykiel offered an early model of fashion designed around women's real lives and comfort, ideas that remain central to contemporary ready-to-wear. Her knitwear innovations still inform the category, and her house's later history is a frequently cited case in discussions of brand succession and ownership.
