Thierry Mugler
Founder of the fashion and fragrance house Mugler
Thierry Mugler (1948 to 2022) was a French designer whose sculpted, theatrical silhouettes defined 1980s power dressing and whose fragrance Angel became one of the best-selling perfumes of the late twentieth century. He left fashion in 2002, but the house he founded continued under new creative directors and remains a reference for spectacle on the runway.

Who is Thierry Mugler?
Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg in December 1948 and died in January 2022 at the age of 73. Trained in classical dance from childhood, he joined the ballet company of the Opéra national du Rhin as a teenager and studied interior design in Strasbourg before moving to Paris at around 20. That background in performance shaped everything he did in fashion.
Career
Mugler launched a first collection, Café de Paris, in 1973 and established the Thierry Mugler label a year later. By 1978 he had opened a boutique on the Place des Victoires in Paris. Through the 1980s his structured shoulders, cinched waists and futuristic, almost architectural silhouettes became central to the era's power dressing, and his shows were staged as large public spectacles.

Influence on the fashion business
Mugler's most important commercial legacy is Angel, launched in 1992 and described as one of the best-selling perfumes of the twentieth century. Its success reshaped the house's economics. Clarins took a 34 per cent stake in Thierry Mugler Couture in 1990 to develop fragrances and raised it to 83.5 per cent in 1997. After Mugler left fashion in 2002, Clarins closed the loss-making ready-to-wear business and kept the profitable perfume activity.
The fashion line was later revived. Nicola Formichetti led it from 2010 to 2013, followed by David Koma and, from 2017, Casey Cadwallader. Mugler's own reputation was renewed by the touring exhibition Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, first shown at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2019, and by his return to design custom pieces for performers such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.
Why it matters
Mugler demonstrated how a strong creative universe can support a fragrance franchise that outlives the founder's own fashion career. His approach to the runway as entertainment anticipated today's focus on shows designed for social media and global audiences, and his archive continues to be a source of inspiration and celebrity dressing.
